Do social networking sites like facebook have benefits for libraries?

Standard

Increasingly most libraries are on social networking sites and in my blog today I will list some of the benefits this has for them.

C. Choi a liaison librarian from the University of Sydney Library has written a great paper on this. http://conferences.alia.org.au/alia2012/Papers/18_Crystall.Choi.pdf

Thus, according to C Choi in summary benefits social media has for libraries:

  • communicate with millions of users
  •  increased user participation
  •  interaction
  •  engagement
  •  rapport building for libraries
  • return visits
  •  referrals
  •  utilisation of library resources
  • libraries could gain biographic information
  •  could be cost effective
